Fondly referred to as “Mother of Medicine” by the local farmers, our honey harvested from the Trigona Itama species of the stingless bee contain non-peroxide anti-microbial activity, similar to the manuka honey. Containing 17 different amino acids, high in bioflavonoids and vitamins A, B, C, D and E, this honey is prized for its medicinal properties. Used for thousands of years by the natives in Brazil, Africa and Asia, pure Trigona Honey is cherished for its anti-oxidant and antibiotic effects. These bees are only found in tropical climates, and they produce much less honey, about 50 times lesser, than the typical honey bee. Pure Trigona Honey is said to have higher nutritional value and wide range of nutrients compared to honey bees as it’s honey is stored by the bees in small pots covered with propolis.
Regular consumption of the honey provides a range of health benefits including anti-aging, enhanced immune system and libido just to name a few. It is commonly used by the locals to treat sore throats, coughs and colds. Coupled with the signature tangy taste, the honey is refreshing whether consumed on its own or mixed with water.
Inspired by meliponculture in Brazil and the distinctly tangy and nutritious honey produced by the stingless bee, Little Green Bee sought to find alternatives to such a rare product closer to Asia. The search led us to the tropical rainforests of Malaysia, where a similar species of stingless bees, Trigona Itama, reside harvesting tree sap to make premium quality propolis and honey from indigenous trees such as the Meranti, Keruin and Merawan.
Stingless bees’ nests are also different from that of honey bees. While honey bees build their nests primary from bee wax, stingless bees mix their wax with plant resins to form Propolis, their main building material.
The normal water content of normal honey bees is usually less than 20%. The low water content is to prevent the fermentation process which would otherwise spoil the honey. However Stingless bee honey does not ferment even with a water content of 25%. This is because the honey is stored in pots of propolis which has antimicrobial properties that infuses into the honey. It is precisely the high antimicrobial properties of the stingless bee honey that stops the honey from spoiling by fermentation.
This is in contrast with normal honey bees which only uses bee wax to build the cells that store honey, hence the honey from normal honey bees does not come into contact with Propolis and hence does not contain the many benefits of propolis in the honey.
The honey also has a lot of nutrients because the bees are smaller than normal honey bees and they can suck nectar from flowers to the deepest space. As a result, the honey collected contains many vitamins and minerals from nature that is highly beneficial for us.
In addition, each batch of Trigona Itama honey harvested by Little Green Bee will be tested and certified to their Propolis Plus Factor (PPF), an indication of the quality and quantity of propolis found naturally within the honey. The PPF is a result of our proprietary harvesting process that collects propolis, together with the honey.
The Trigona Itama honey harvested is categorized into 2 levels, Trigona Itama honey PPF +5 and Trigona Itama Honey PPF +15. The 2 levels represent not only the non-peroxide activity (NPA) level of the honey; with PPF+5 equivalent to NPA +5 and PPF +15 equivalent to NPA +15, but also representing that the higher grade +15 contains higher quality and quantity of Propolis naturally occurring in the honey.
Key benefits of regularly consuming Little Green Bee’s Trigona Itama honey include improved immune system, increased virality, anti-aging and improved respiratory health. The benefits of nature, from nature to you.
Key Benefits of consuming the honey include:
- Anti-oxidant boost
- Improved immune system
- Increased male virility
- Improved respiratory health
- Slows down the process of aging
Certified Activity Levels
The honey produced by the stingless bees contain non-peroxide anti-microbial activity (NPA), similar to what is found in Manuka honey. In addition, each batch of honey that we harvest will be tested and certified specifically to their Propolis Plus Factor (PPF), an indication of the quality and quantity of propolis found naturally within the honey. The PPF is a result of our proprietary harvesting process that collects propolis, the resinous mixture that the hive is made up of, together with the honey. Propolis on its own is one of nature’s marvels. Creating a sterile environment for the hive, it inhibits bacterial and fungal growth and works as a defense mechanism. It is this resinous mixture that gives the honey its unique NPA trait.
To ensure that consumption is done correctly, the honey that we produce will all be prominently labeled, with recommendations of use corresponding to the appropriate PPF levels.
